A few weeks ago, our team delivered a new blood warmer to our partners in the 1st Medical Battalion (https://linktr.ee/1med.army) in Ukraine.

This is now the third blood warmer we have supplied to frontline medical teams, and we are determined to continue doing so.

But why would you need a blood warmer when it’s 30°C outside?

Because the outside temperature has nothing to do with the temperature of the transfused blood.

Blood products are stored in the refrigerator. When a seriously injured patient requires a rapid, life-saving transfusion, the administration of large volumes of cold blood can contribute significantly to hypothermia, particularly in a patient who is already in haemorrhagic shock with massive blood loss.

And hypothermia is much more than just feeling cold.

In cases of severe trauma, it forms part of the “lethal triad” of trauma, alongside acidosis and coagulopathy. Once this vicious circle is set in motion, the patient’s ability to stop the bleeding and survive can deteriorate very rapidly.

That is why warming the blood is essential, whatever the season.

The 3M Ranger 245 enables blood and infusions to be warmed rapidly during transfusion, allowing medical teams to administer warmed fluids and blood, even during rapid, high-volume transfusions.

For a combat medic treating a seriously injured patient, a blood warmer is therefore not just for use in winter.

It can be just as vital in the height of summer.

We have now delivered three units to medical teams in the field. But the needs are still far greater.

We are raising funds to provide more blood warmers to medical units treating wounded soldiers and civilians in Ukraine.
